Sarah's Necklace

A light twinkled in the corner of Sarah's eye, distracting her. She glanced over at it and thought nothing of it at first as she roughly sat onto her mother's bed. The satin red sheets wrinkled a bit, and caused her mother to frown. "Sarah, I've only just ironed those sheets..."
The girl smiled. "It's my birthday, can't you let it slide?"
"I suppose." Her mother smiled back, then returned to her ironing.
The light flickered again. Sarah blinked, then jumped off again out of annoyance, walking over to her mother's jewelry box.
There were various sized necklaces with stones, and earrings scattered around with some missing their partners. The one that had been pestering her eyes was hung on a thin, gold chain. It bore a round golden pendant, with crystal gems circling a larger one, with blood-red shading.
Sarah gently tugged it loose of a silver chain's hold, and lifted it curiously towards the light. "Mom, when did you get this?"
Sarah's mom glanced back, then shook her head in dismissal. "Just an old necklace I've forgotten about. I got it nearly twenty years ago, I think. Nothing special." She resumed her ironing.
Her eyes gleamed in curiousity. "Can I have it?"
The mom turned her head again, seeming a bit surprised. "Well, sure...but, Sarah, why do you want it?..."
Sarah smiled and shrugged. "It just seems pretty, I guess...besides, if I won't wear it, I can just let Kat wear it!" The girl walked over to an old cat doll flipped over on the bed. She sat the doll up and tied the chain around its thin neck, humming with satisfaction. "It looks great!"
She let out a short laugh before folding one of Sarah's shirts. "I'm still shocked you kept Kat, considering it's been about..."
"Five years."
"Right!" She smiled, then shooed her out playfully. "Take Kat and go play with your new things, I need to finish this."
"Thanks, Mom," Sarah cheered quickly before the door shut in front of her. Still smiling and holding the stuffed toy, she walked across the hall to her own room and shut it, then propped Kat up on her dresser. "You look great with that on, Kat!..."
